Justin Lerma recently received an Honorable Discharge from the United States Navy where he served as Principal Tuba of the U.S. Naval Forces Europe Band-Naples, Italy. During his tenure, Justin performed on four continents and in 30 countries including Poland, Gabon, Tunisia, Bulgaria, and Portugal. Additionally, Mr. Lerma has presented master classes and chamber performances at the Conservatorio di Music San Pietro a Majella in Naples, Italy and Batumi Art Training University in Batumi, Georgia. In addition to his duties as a tuba instrumentalist and head librarian, Justin regularly performed with the brass band, ceremonial band, brass quintet, and brass ensemble.
His awards include two Navy and Marine Corp. Achievement Medals, the Meritorious Unit Commendation Ribbon, the Good Conduct Medal, and several Flag Letters of Commendation.
Justin, a San Antonio native, began his studies with Lee Hipp and attended the University of Texas at Austin to study with Steven Bryant and Charles Villarrubia. Additional teachers include, Dave Kirk, Anne Jelle Visser, Craig Knox, Aubrey Foard, and Michael Priddy.
Away from the tuba, just enjoys painting with oils and acrylics, reading comic books, and spending time with his family.
